Divine Praises

September 12th is recognized in the Church as the feast of the Holy Name of Mary. The feast day was started as a way of thanking our Lady for her intercession at the Battle of Vienna back in 1683 (1). Throughout history our lady has helped us in times of trouble and has faithfully guided the people of the Christian Church towards her son, Jesus Christ.

Since the earliest Christians, Mary was recognized as a holy woman and praised for her devotion and sanctitiy. There are hymns dating back to 250 AD and paintings in her honor from the first century. For the first 1500 years of Church history, you could not have Christianity without a proper respect for the Virgin Mary.

In the Magnificat, the prayer the Mary proclaimed after the Annunciation, she states that “For he has looked with kindness on his lowly servant… and all generations shall call me blessed and Holy is his name” (Lk 1:46-49). Even in moment of great wonder, Mary recognizes herself only as a lowly servant-her fiat was one of complete surrender to the Will of God. For being such a young girl, she had the deep wisdom to know that God’s Will is greater

Mary is the ideal Christian: Humble, Kind, Forgiving. She places the desires of God and the needs of others before her own. We are called to do the same, with the same spirit of love that Mary shows to us.

On the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary we can remember to be gentle and meek. In attempting to be humble every single day we honor God by affording him the right honor in our life and imitate the gentleness of our Mother.

We honor her name because she honored God first with her whole being.

We honor the name of Mary because she is a perfect reflection to Christ in her humility

We honor and praise Our Lady because she never fails to bring us to God the Father.

We honor her because she willingly gave her life and body so that Christ may live and there is not a greater gift that a simple woman could give to humanity.
